Abortion Services

For PEI residents requesting an abortion procedure, the service is offered at hospitals out-of-province.  The process requires a doctors’ referral and the request is reviewed by the Medicare Medical Consultant.

Physician and hospital costs for the procedure are covered by the province.  Travel/transportation and other expenses are the patient’s responsibility.

Abortion procedures performed at private clinics are not covered by the province, as private clinics are not insured under Medicare.

Island women usually travel to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, in Halifax – Termination of Pregnancy Unit, (902) 473-7072.

For referral, contact your family physician or go to a walk-in clinic.  The Termination of Pregnancy Unit, QEII, Halifax (referenced above) can also assist with a referral or other various information.

For patients who may require information regarding access to social workers or other health care professionals, this can be obtained through the physician that provides the referral or the out-of-province coordinator at (902) 368-6516.
