Abortion Services

If you wish to terminate your pregnancy, Abortion Services are offered at a hospital out-of-province.

How do I access Abortion Services?
You must be no more than 16 weeks pregnant to access this service. You will need a doctor’s referral that can be obtained through your family doctor or by going to a walk-in clinic. The Termination of Pregnancy Unit at the QEII can also help with a referral. Once your referral has been submitted, it will then be reviewed by the Medicare Medical Consultant and/or designate for approval.

Where will I have to travel for my procedure?
Island women usually travel to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For more information, you can call their Termination of Pregnancy Unit at (902) 473-7072.

Will I have to pay for the abortion service?
You will not have to pay for approved physician and hospital costs; however, you will have to pay for travel, accommodations and other expenses. You may be eligible to travel on Maritime Bus through the out-of-province travel support program to and from your medical service. For more information, call (902) 368-5918 or e-mail ooptravelsupport@gov.pe.ca.

Please note: Abortion procedures performed at private clinics are not covered by the province.

What other support is offered?
Access to social workers or other health care professionals may be available to you and can be obtained from your referring physician or by contacting the Out-of-Province Coordinator at (902) 368-6516.

What other resources are available?
The PEI Reproductive Rights Organization is available for more information.  You can email them at peireproductiverightsorg@gmail.com
