Input sought on how to make our system more sustainable

May 15, 2013

We have talked for years of the need for a sustainable health-care system. We all know that we cannot sustain 6 percent increases, year after year. We also know we must make smart decisions today to ensure there is safe, quality care for the Islanders of tomorrow.

Health PEI received a three percent funding increase this year, although our expenses have been growing at an unsustainable rate of six percent. Managing our resources will become more challenging in the coming years as our population ages and we continue to introduce effective new interventions, treatments, drugs, and technologies.

The strategic initiatives we have been conducting over the past few years are driven by quality, access, safety, and sustainability. We must continue on this road if we want a system that will be there for generations to come.

Our new 2013-2016 strategic plan focuses on three goals: quality, access and efficiency. In the coming weeks, we will be implementing a system-wide resource planning process to address these goals.

Through this resource planning process, we will gather input on how to make better use of our health care dollars. Teams will be set up to identify opportunities based on common criteria and the best-evidence available. Each team’s proposals will be reviewed to determine which ones hold the most benefit for the system as a whole.

It is our responsibility to Islanders to continually assess our services and ensure they are provided as effectively and efficiently as possible. Every one of us – staff and physicians alike – can identify ways to make better use of our resources and in turn, bring our expenditures in line with the funds available.

All staff and physicians are encouraged to submit any ideas directly to your supervisor or anonymously at www.healthpei.ca/mrc/suggestions.php. Only through our combined efforts can we achieve a quality-driven, sustainable health system for present and future Islanders.
