Health Coverage of Snow BirdsThe term "snow bird" is used to define such a person who is temporarily absent from the province for winter vacations and other similar situations.
Eligible PEI residents are covered for emergency or sudden illnesss only. The period of coverage will vary according to the circumstances surrounding the temporary absence. For example, individuals who are absent each year for winter vacations and similar situations involving regular absences, must reside in PEI for at least six months plus a day each year.
It is important that you notify Health PEI of any absences exceeding one month. This will help to avoid delays in payment for out-province or out-of-country services.
Please contact Medicare Services at 1-800-321-5492 and advise them of the:
- date of departure;
- reason for absence and;
- date of return.
Under some circumstances, coverage for emergency or sudden illness may be extended up to one year. Such circumstances could include missionary work, sabbatical leave, etc.
You are advised to contact the Medicare Office for information on coverage if you are planning a lengthy absence from the province.
