A Computed Tomography scan, often referred to as a CT scan or a CAT scan, utilizes specialized equipment to obtain images from different angles around a specific body part. A computer then processes the information to show a cross-sectional image of body tissues and organs. Some CT scans require the use of contrast media to outline blood vessles and organs.

The CT scanners at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and Prince County Hospital (PCH) are capable of imaging several types of tissue (bone, lung, blood vessels and soft tissue) with great clarity. The types of CT scans range from trauma, brain, lung, abdomen and skeletal.

During the procedure, the patient lies on a narrow table that slides close to the scanner. The patient may be asked to hold their breath during the scan to eliminate image motion.

The following are CT Scan procedures performed in the QEH and PCH Diagnostic Imaging Departments:
  • CT Abdomen
  • CT Abdomen and Pelvis (Adult & Pediatric)
  • CT Angiography
  • CT Chest
  • CT Head
  • CT KUB (kidneys, ureter and bladder)
  • CT Neck
  • CT Pelvis
  • CT Spines / Extremities
