Meningitis Drug Program

If you have been diagnosed with meningitis, or are at risk of infection, you may be eligible for coverage of approved prescription medication costs through the Meningitis Drug Program.

Am I eligible?
You are eligible for this program if you have a PEI Health Card, and:

  • have been diagnosed with meningitis;
  • have come in close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with meningitis; or
  • are at an increased risk of infection.

How do I apply?
There is no application process. The program is administered by the Chief Public Health Office.

How much of the medication cost will be covered?
All costs of approved medications are covered by the program.

What if my medication is not listed in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary?
If your medication is not included in the PEI Pharmacare Formulary, it will not be eligible for cost coverage. You will only be eligible for coverage of the approved medications through the Meningitis Drug Program.

Where can I get my medication?
Once you are registered with the program, you can pick up your medications at the Provincial Pharmacy. If you cannot pick up your medications, you can pay the courier cost and have them delivered to your home.

Will I get a refund for medication I already purchased?

Coverage is not retroactive, you will not be reimbursed for medications you have already purchased.

What if I move away from PEI?
Your eligibility for this program will end the day you leave PEI to take up residency elsewhere.
