Strategic Initiatives

Various strategic initiatives are being developed and implemented to address our health system's challenges.  The reasons for transformation are clear. Addressing the challenges of an aging population, increased demand for services, human resource shortages, and staff workload issues is critical to ensure sustainable health care for the future - we must change the way services are delivered to ensure Islanders continue to have access to high quality health care services on PEI.

One Island Health System is about working together as a single integrated system of care to make the best use of system resources to support the improved health of all Islanders.

Changes required to achieve our vision include:
  • Reduce reliance on bed-based care as the primary method to meet health care needs;
  • Increase emphasis on community-based primary health care and home-based services so that the majority of people's health care needs can be met as close to home as possible;
  • Improve access and reduce delays for people who require bed-based care; and
  • Enhance system enablers, particularly in the areas of information management / technology, governance, management and medical leadership models; planning and decision support.
